Applicants must be in possession of:

Refer to the list of country-specific qualifications

  1. the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in Youth and Community Studies or
  2. the Bachelor of Arts in Youth and Community Studies obtained prior to 2004 or
  3. an Honours degree from the University of Malta or another university in an area of study that is deemed relevant by the Faculty Board, together with a minimum of two years' experience in a youth or community setting.

Applicants applying for admission in terms of (c) will need to satisfy a board through an interview, that they have the necessary academic background, professional aptitude and disposition to follow the Course with profit.

Requires the submission of a Police Certificate of Conduct.

This programme explores the life-world of young people and their engagement with the wider community in both local and global contexts. It is aimed at furthering your academic competencies in youth and community studies and to develop the expertise of youth work and youth policy practitioners, with an emphasis on evidence-based and reflective practice. This programme constitutes an important route into the youth work profession. Graduates may apply for the warrant of youth worker subject to meeting the requirements specified by Youth Work Profession Act, 2014.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master in Youth and Community Studies under the auspices of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

By the end of the programme of study, you will be able to:

  • Demonstrate critical engagement with key issues in youth and community work within an evolving local, national and global context.
  • Understand and apply theory relating to the development of young people across a range of intersecting domains.
  • Develop the skills and knowledge of the reflective practitioner in order to inform ethical and anti-oppressive practice.
  • Understand, distinguish between and synthesize different youth work theories, models and strategies, and apply this knowledge to the development of project development, service delivery and policy debate and development.
  • Design and conduct research to inform practice, service delivery and policy development with a solid evidence base.
  • Demonstrate a critical understanding of the core values and principles informing interventions within the evolving local, European and global contexts.

As a graduate of this programme, you will be prepared to work in different communities and social settings linked to youth and community work that among others include schools, youth centres and hubs, local councils and NGO's. Other areas are related to the voluntary sector, community activism, social enterprise, as well as social and research agencies.

This programme offers an important pathway to the youth work profession. You may apply for the warrant of youth worker, subject to meeting the requirements specified by the Youth Work Profession Act, 2014. The degree also leads to other higher education qualifications that include doctoral studies.
