| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed for students from all academic backgrounds and stages of their degree, who wish to cultivate their entrepreneurial flair, leadership skills and creativity. Delivered in the form of a week-long BootCamp, the StartUp Programme is all about finding your niche and developing a business concept which has the potential to make a big impact on the market and the lives of your customers. JA StartUp Teams learn how to recognise their strengths, build a team, research, and create an innovative product/service and put their concept to the test. Start-ups learn to pitch successfully to potential partners, collaborators and investors and prepare and deliver an elevator pitch to JA’s independent judging panel as part of the Start Up Competition. The Programme culminates in Semi-finals and then the Finals & Awards Night where the teams will deliver a pitch to the StartUp Judges and an audience of Malta’s finest business leaders. This event acts a launch-pad for JA StartUps to facilitate their entry into the Maltese business network. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Establish yourself as a skilled start-up entrepreneur with a diverse business network; - Become adept at pitching business projects to successfully secure funding and partnerships; - Become skilled in ‘putting yourself out there’ to meet people and take important risks to help you progress; - Become skilled in range of business disciplines from marketing to finance and from human resources to research and development; - Create an innovative, promising and financially viable start-up enterprise and become Your Own Boss; - Be given a platform to express your creativity and innovativeness; - Enjoy networking opportunities with business professionals; Become an active team-player who is skilled in negotiation. 2. Unit Material: - Appropriate unit material will be provided by JA Staff, Mentors and guest speakers during the sessions and further resources will be available to students of JA’s digital platforms. 3. Assessment: - During the EY Concept Validation Competition, each StartUp Team is then required to present their work to an independent panel of expert Judges as part of the first phase of the StartUp Competition. The Judges review each team’s work and offer guidance on how the team can improve and refine their concept. The Teams will then take this feedback onboard and participate in the Semi Finals stage of the Competition. The top six teams will be asked to deliver a formal business presentation to the StartUp Judging Panel during the JA Malta Finals & Awards night. These tasks are part of the competition but are not assessed formally. The national winners of the JA Malta StartUp Programme will represent Malta at the JA Europe GEn-E Festical (participation fees paid by JA Malta) in Istanbul, Turkey in July 2023 where all the national winners will represent their respective country for the winning titles. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the Programme. |
