DESCRIPTION | The human history of Malta is inextricably bound to the sea, serving as a connection to the rest of the Mediterranean and beyond. The sea brought people, ideas, commerce and even war to the Maltese archipelago, shaping the islands story and identity; a story of human activity that spans millennia and is reflected in the islands’ landscape and seascape. This unit will offer insight into Malta’s maritime past, its relationship with the sea and Malta’s maritime cultural heritage landscape. Learning Objectives - To acknowledge the sea’s role in shaping Malta’s past and present - To bring to light historical narratives told from a maritime perspective - To understand then subsequently valorise Malta’s maritime cultural landscape - To acknowledge the tangible and intangible evidence of Malta’s maritime history and heritage Learning Outcomes: By the end of this study-unit, students should be able to: - Study and discuss Maltese historical events from a maritime perspective - Have a heightened awareness of how Malta’s maritime character shaped the Maltese islands - Identify the sources of evidence available - Understand the relationship among different facets of the Maltese maritime cultural landscape - Understand the importance of studying, preserving and promoting existing maritime practices and traditions Unit Material: - Appropriate reading material and / or handouts will be provided by the tutor during sessions and / or on the respective VLE area. Assessment: - In keeping with the spirit of the Degree Plus, there will be no formal assessment associated with this study-unit. A certificate of attendance and of satisfactory completion of the unit will be provided at the end of the semester. |
