DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is designed for students who would like to explore the world of interpreting through fun exercises in various languages. The students will be taught the basics of consecutive interpretation through note-taking and memory exercises. They will also be introduced to sight translation (interpreting a written text from the page) and they will have the opportunity to step inside the booths for short simultaneous interpretation exercises. The course is open to students who are proficient in any two (or more) of the following languages: English, Maltese, Italian, French and Dutch. There is no need for a degree in languages but a sound knowledge of at least two of the languages listed above is a must. The main focus of the course is on technique. The course is open to a maximum of 12 students. Upon registration kindly share which languages you can work from and into. Learning Objectives: - To get acquainted with the different interpretation modes and techniques - To practise consecutive and simultaneous interpretation through basic exercises - To learn how to interpret short written texts from the page - To gain a better insight into the skills needed to study interpretation at a more advanced level Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Be able to interpret short written speeches from the page - Have a good understanding of basic note-taking techniques - Be able to interpret short speeches (up to 4 minutes) consecutively (i.e. by relying on their notes and memory) - Be able to interpret short speeches (up to 4 minutes) simultaneously (i.e. in the booth) - Have an insight into the basic skills required to study interpreting at a more advanced level Unit Material: Handouts will be provided during the sessions. Students are kindly asked to bring headphones and a laptop or tablet that can connect to Wi-Fi. Assessment: In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with this unit. However, attendance and active participation in the sessions are compulsory. Note: Degree plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of the many academic demands placed on students during their undergraduate years. |
