DESCRIPTION | This study-unit shall endeavour to give students a holistic introduction to shipping law. The course will outline and delve into the legal framework regulating different facets and areas of the maritime industry. The course will cover topics ranging from ‘wet’ shipping law such as salvage, towage, pilotage and collisions to ‘dry’ shipping such as charterparties and yachting. It will also give students an understanding of what inter alia ship registration, ship finance and yachting entail. The course will be delivered through a combination of lectures, case studies, discussions, delivered and run by legal practitioners within Fenech & Fenech. Students will be encouraged to engage in working groups and participate in group presentations to deepen their understanding of the practical applications in the field of maritime and shipping law. The following subjects shall be covered: - Salvage, towage, pilotage and collisions - Arrest and Enforcements - Carriage of Goods - Yachting - Ship Registration and Finance - Other tenets of Shipping Law - Future challenges and trends in Maritime Law - Working Groups’ Case Studies Unit Material: Appropriate unit material will be provided by the tutor during the sessions. Assessment: In keeping with the spirit of Degree Plus, there is no formal assessment associated with this unit. However, attendance and active participation including participation in working group case studies in some of the sessions are compulsory. Note: Degree-plus units are not designed to be incrementally burdensome in terms of many academic demands however participants would gain more if they experiment with their acquired skills between sessions. |
