DESCRIPTION | ELSA Malta’s Legal Debates and ELSA Malta’s Negotiations Competition are two distinct events which seek to enhance and promote the practical side of the legal profession. Both Legal Debates and Negotiations Competition are preceded by How-To Sessions, in which professional speakers from top-tier law firms deliver insight and tips which help participants prepare for the respective competitions. These competitions serve to provide students the platform to hone their skills beyond academics, including skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, teamwork and cooperation, and communication, among others. Both competitions require participants to pair up into teams of 2, with the winning team for each competition to be awarded for their work. These competitions are open to all students within the law course, with participating teams being admitted on a first-come-first-serve basis. Participants must also attend the How-To Sessions which precede the competitions. Legal Debates is an event in which participants are given a case pertaining to a legal theme which is argued by the teams, which are split into teams ‘in favour’ or ‘against’ the notion. The Negotiations Competition surrounds different case studies, involving cases on unfair dismissal, merger contracts, and defamation, among others.
