DESCRIPTION This study-unit has an interprofessional aim targeting those professionals who work with children and adolescents. This may involve individuals who work in pediatric care settings, schools, youth organisations and similar entities. Whilst this approach encourages the mixing of various skills, the different topics that feature in the study-unit will draw upon the experiences of the students during discussions. Topics focus on enhancing the understanding, identification and management of the common mental illnesses present in children and adolescents.

Study-unit Aims:

- To promote understanding in the area of child and adolescent mental health.
- To facilitate the integration of theoretical knowledge with practice in the area.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of the various conditions and mental health problems associated with children and adolescents.
- Discuss the various pharmacological and psychotherapeutic interventions used with children adolescents and their families.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Carry out an assessment and plan appropriate care.
- Assess the impact of the development of behavioural problems and/or mental illness on the child or adolescent and his/her family.
- Use the skills discussed during the study unit to communicate with and care effectively for children and adolescents with mental health problems.
