DESCRIPTION This sudy-unit covers the following aspects of Health Information:

This study-unit covers the theory and practice related to health information systems, health statistics and research and how this can be applied for health service planning and evaluation. This unit looks at various aspects of populations, routine sources of data including population registers and ad hoc surveys and how these can be utilised to provide information to specific stakeholders for action.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to provide postgraduate students with the academic basis for effective specialist public health practice in the domain of Health Information.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Display possession of a post-graduate level of theoretical knowledge in the three main sub-domains articulated above, Information on Populations, Information on Sickness & Health, Practical Applications of Health Information;
- Display understanding of the tacit knowledge gained through successful elaboration of the knowledge in the context of relevant public health scenarios, as evidenced by appropriate discussion;
- Relate the use of routine and ad hoc sources of data;
- Critically appriase the advantages and diasvantages of main sources of data.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Effectively apply the knowledge and understanding gained in practical, real-life public health scenarios;
- Demonstrate how information can be utilised for the planning, monitoring and evaulation of health systems;
- Interpret changes in health indicators.
