The Music Studies Department, at the School of Performing Arts, University of Malta, is pleased to announce two seminars by Dr John M. Kennedy. Dr Kennedy is Professor of Music at California State University, Los Angeles. He is currently a Fulbright Scholar at the Department of Music Studies.

A presentation of 'Desde el Balcon' for viola and baritone voice, with pertinent discussion and analysis of the specific techniques used in the text setting. The texts for the work are from the poetry of Federico GarcĂa Lorca, and portrays the role of the observer from the balcony. The work focuses on the viola part and how the instrument underscores and foreshadows the text through various motivic ideas. Also discussed will be the use of extended vocal techniques as they relate to the texts.

A presentation on American Jazz Saxophonist Wayne Shorter's 'Nefertiti', and the recording by the Miles Davis Quintet in 1967. The presentation will discuss the complementary hexachords in the jazz classic, and other modernist techniques.
