Dr Inġ. John Caruana joined Enemalta Corporation in 1984. Since then, he held various posts starting as a Lineman, Distribution Technical Officer and Head of Training Centre. He furthered his studies and obtained a B.Eng. (Hons) in Electrical Engineering from the University of Malta, an M.Sc. in Power Distribution Engineering from the University of Manchester and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Newcastle University.
In 2001 he joined the T&D Operations and Planning Section responsible for the HV network in the Maltese Islands. Two years later he joined the T&D Development & Maintenance Section and was assigned the responsibility of all primary substations in the network. In 2007 he was promoted to Assistant Manager and was responsible for managing a team of engineers responsible for the primary substations and the SCADA project.
As a Manager Network Maintenance, he was responsible for the maintenance of all primary and distribution substations throughout the Maltese Islands. In addition to this, he was also responsible and lead a team dealing with projects in primary substations at 132/33/11kV with particular interest in Protection and Control Systems. The team was also responsible for the maintenance and upgrade of the SCADA system installed in the Maltese Power System network. He introduced the 11kV substation automation, achieving a better restoration time following faults on the 11kV network.
Presently he holds the post of Divisional Manager Distribution, responsible for Smart Meters, Research and Innovation, training and other assigned tasks related to the planning and operations of the network.
He is a visiting senior lecturer at the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at the University of Malta and for 10 years he held the post of Industrial Lecturer in Power Distribution Engineering at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Newcastle University. John is registered in UK as a Chartered Engineer and is a member of the Institution of Engineer and Technology and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
