We are a department with a friendly outlook and energetic academic, administrative and technical staff, dedicated to the teaching and study of the ancient world and archaeological practice to local, visiting, and overseas students. We have an active research programme that includes a number of international collaborations in the fields of prehistory, the history of archaeology, maritime archaeology, archaeological science and environmental archaeology. We collaborate with Heritage Malta and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and supports the activities of the Malta Archaeological Society and of the Malta Classics Association. We have our own building on campus for teaching and research, and have access to scientific facilities, a laboratory, and expertise in a number of faculties.
Our graduates have gone on to pursue careers in field archaeology, museums, heritage management, teaching, advertising, civil service, and academia, locally and overseas.
Our mission statement is to pursue and share understanding and knowledge about the ancient Mediterranean world through the study of material culture, language and literature, in a stimulating and supportive teaching and research environment, and engaged with society’s interests, concerns, priorities, and aspirations.
Our vision statement is to have quality graduates who are knowledgeable about the past, possess the skills and competences for professional practice, and are capable to contribute to society without prejudice and preconceptions.
