The importance of English in today’s world cannot, therefore, be overestimated.
By studying English language and literature you will be given access to a wealth of inspiration and creativity, while also developing skills that are essential for today’s global environment. It is an opportunity to explore how literature makes sense of the world through stories, poems, novels and plays, and how English reflects, is shaped by, and shapes, its speakers worldwide. The BA programme will take your appreciation of canonical authors like William Shakespeare and Jane Austen to an entirely new level, but it will also broaden your understanding of what English literature is, exposing you to new traditions and cultures as well as bringing you right up to date with contemporary literature in English. Complementing the primary focus on literature, you will also receive an excellent grounding in linguistics, heightening your sensitivity toward the English language and adding to a set of transferable skills that is highly sought after by employers.
