Geography matters today more than ever in a globalised inter-connected world, where the most impactful events and challenges rooted in geography: population growth, environmental threats, expanding cities, resource exploitation, pollution, climate change, migration, well-being and social justice. The essence of geography is to remain reactive and relevant as a breathing, open discipline and constantly adapting itself to understand and resolve these transformative changes.
In a future where change will remain the only constant, geographers are trained at the University of Malta to acquire competences and knowledge about the sensitive and ever-changing relationships between humans and their landscapes. Our geographers become skilled graduates thanks to a rich degree programme in physical and human geography covering theoretical spatial knowledge coupled with extensive fieldwork, and the application of innovative digital learning tools which are today's foundation to many spatially driven technologies. Most importantly, our graduates are encouraged to nurture critical thinking and a sense of purpose in their role as positive contributors to society.
Geography graduates from the University of Malta are recognised as highly employable professionals in a variety of sectors, from public administration to a number of key regulatory authorities dealing with land use, planning, transport, environment and resources, tourism and public health. Opportunities are also growing in the private sector, especially in the fields of environmental management, impact assessment, geotechnical surveying, planning, land and real estate management, and marine affairs. Studying geography was and will remain a degree that prepares graduates for the future.
