The project 'EU Democracy Promotion from a Postcolonial Perspective' seeks to analyse how the EU reconciles its position as a 'natural' promoter of democracy and human rights across the globe with the colonial past of some of its key member states, which a few decades ago contested the application of such rights in the colonies, both in theory and in practice. Using discourse analysis, the project examines how democracy promotion is discursively anchored in particular narratives of European history.
