The European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (EMA)

Do you want to work actively to promote human dignity, equality, democracy, and the rule of law?

Do you want to become one of over 5,500 alumni worldwide working in human rights organisations and with governments to further human dignity and freedom?

Do you want to see new horizons and meet new people – fellow students and lecturers – from around the world?

Join the European Master’s Programme in Human Rights and Democratisation (EMA), a one-year, full-time, practice- and policy-oriented programme that combines legal, political, historical, anthropological, and philosophical perspectives on human rights and democratisation with skill-building activities and a field trip exercise.

The programme is taught jointly by leading academics drawn from over forty EMA participating universities – including the University of Malta – together with experts and representatives of international organisations and NGOs. The curriculum prepares participants for working at national and international level, and with both civil society and governments on human rights and democratisation. By involving 42 European universities and experts from NGOs and IGOs, this programme has become instrumental in facilitating cooperation on human rights and democracy in Europe and beyond.

Many EMA graduates go on to work on human rights and democratization with civil society organisations at national or international level. Many are also involved in human rights-related work within governments or work for international institutions. Some graduates pursue an academic career and a few have even gone “full circle” and become the representatives of EMA participating universities!

The EMA attracts students from around the world, who gather at the Global Campus of Human Rights Headquarters in Venice, Italy for one semester of intense study (Sept.-Jan.). They then move on to study for their second semester (Feb.-Jul.) at one of the 42 participating universities in Europe.

The EMA is part of the Global Campus of Human Rights, an inter-disciplinary centre of excellence promoting human rights and democratisation through higher education, specialised training programmes, research, and outreach. The Global Campus includes over one hundred prestigious member universities from around the world, including the Arab world, Asia-Pacific, Caucasus, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Southeast Europe, with headquarters in Pretoria, Beirut, Bangkok, Yerevan, Buenos Aires, Sarajevo/Bologna and Venice, Italy. As such, the Global Campus represents a unique example of worldwide inter-university cooperation in the field.

At the University of Malta, this programme is hosted by the Department of International Relations.
