This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Master of Arts in Islands and Small States under the auspices of the Institute for Islands and Small States.

On completion of this course you should be able to understand the special problems and opportunities faced by Small States and Small Island Jurisdictions with regard to environmental, economic, social and political concerns, at the national, regional and international levels. Students would also be encouraged to conduct research and are expected to write a dissertation on islands and small states issues. You will be able to:

  • Undertake an in-depth analysis of economic and environmental realities in territories characterised by small population size and insularity, enabling you to identify situations where one-size-fits-all policy measures may not be appropriate.
  • Apply techniques for ‘measuring’ the effect of climate change including temperature, precipitation and sea-level rise and assess the ‘best predictions’ of current climate models.
  • Formulate policies and develop negotiating skills.
  • Develop skills in assessing risks and in proposing policy approaches to build disaster resilience.
  • Evaluate policies that are conducive to sustainable economic development of small island states.
  • Apply techniques involving qualitative and quantitative approaches for analysing matters relating to biogeography, including populations and population growth, intra- and inter-specific interactions, ecological niches, communities and ecosystems, evolutionary process on island and threats to island ecosystems.
