This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the degree of Master of Gender, Society and Culture – M. GSC - under the auspices of the Faculty for Social Wellbeing.

The aim of this proposed programme is to allow you to apply Gender epistemologies and research methodologies to a specific area of your choice; and, additionally and importantly, to engage deeply in three key cornerstones: Gender Based Violence; Gender and Culture; and Gender and Social Justice.

The programme is being designed to allow you to read deeply across several key areas and then, with a selected supervisor, engage in a study in a particular area of interest, thereby contributing to a richer understanding of Gender Studies both generally and specifically.

At Masters level, you are your own best resource and what you get out of the course depends very largely on what you put into your studies for it. That said, if you do all the prescribed reading, participate fully, read around the subject, and keep pace with the work set, allowing sufficient time for any research work and/or revision, then you can expect to be able to do the following:

  • demonstrate a deep understanding and knowledge of the subjects taught, both gender generic and specific;
  • show that you can critically evaluate and review existing literature and research in relation to Violence against Women, Gender and Culture and Gender and Social Justice;
  • demonstrate an ability to plan, manage and conduct appropriate research in the required fields;
  • be able to analyse and interpret findings, giving meaning to identified trends, phenomena and findings;
  • be able to document, communicate and to demonstrate and share findings with other researchers through well planned, presented and explained relevant documentation as well as through class presentations;
  • be able to collate, document and present a dissertation respecting academic standards.

It is our vision that you will become a champion in the subject areas and will be able to disseminate and promote findings and outcomes derived from their learning and research.

The programme will not only enrich you in terms of personal and professional knowledge and skills but will also allow you to transfer this newfound knowledge to fellow researchers, professional colleagues and to society in general.

Key transferable skills include the ability to: plan, organise and manage assignments and projects; work independently; meet deadlines; good time management; enhanced investigative and analytical skills; research and document findings; communicate findings to others; and to demonstrate competence in the specific subject areas.

Apart from gaining knowledge in specific subject areas, which will broaden your knowledge base, the programme allows you to select a study area for dissertation that is appropriate to your employment and personal development. You will also benefit from networking with peers, as well as working directly with an appointed supervisor. Overall the programme will further enhance intellectual skills through close and regular contact with academic staff.
