The Master of Laws in European Business Law is based on a grouping of subjects offered also on the general LLM in European and Comparative Law. This is the degree if you have decided to specialise in the business law of Europe and wish to be known as such.

The LLM in European Business Law is mainly a taught course on which you will undergo directed reading, research and write papers for presentation in seminars led by the course professor. It also includes an important dissertation component. The programme aims to:

  • Provide postgraduate specialisation in European Business Law and related comparative law to holders of a good first degree in law.
  • Prepare you for a specialist career, whether in private practice in Malta or abroad, in the European Union Institutions, in other international organizations, or as an advisor to government and other entities, among other possible careers.

This programme of study is also offered on a part-time basis. Please consult the Registrar's website for more information pertaining to courses offered by the University. The Master of Laws in European Business Law is a new specialist LLM which is based on a grouping of subjects offered also on the general LLM in European and Comparative Law. However, registering for this degree means that you will obtain a degree with the specific title of LLM in European Business Law, and be able to market yourself as a specialist graduate lawyer in that specific field of law. This degree is intended if you have decided to specialise in the business law of Europe and wish to be known as such.

As with the general LLM offered by the Department, the LLM in European Business Law is mainly a taught course on which you are directed reading and research and write papers for presentation in seminars (group sessions) which are then led by the course professor. It also includes an important dissertation component. The first aim is that of providing postgraduate specialisation in European Business Law and related comparative law to holders of a good first degree in law. The programme of studies includes three compulsory courses and a free choice of the remaining study units from a list of elective subjects. In principle, the comparative (national law) dimension is worked into most subjects, while also being the principal methodology employed in a number of study units. The level of the degree compares with the level of leading LL.M programmes in other European universities, this being certified on an annual basis by an external examiner from a European university. The second aim is to prepare the student for a specialist career, whether in private practice in Malta or abroad, in the European Union Institutions, in other international organizations, or as advisors to government and other entities, among other possible careers.

The programme provides an in-depth specialisation in European Business law. It does so against the backdrop of a fast-evolving economic, financial and social environment in Europe and beyond, as also the constant and complex evolution of the European Union itself.

In addition to the compulsory study-units, students are required to choose study-units to the value of 15 ECTS credits from the elective on offer during the year.

An elective study-unit will ONLY be offered if a sufficient number of students register for it. Consequently, the availability of respective study-units will only be confirmed after the registeration period.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Master of Laws - LL.M. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Laws.

The overall learning outcomes as a student of Master in Laws (LL.M.) in European Business Law include:

  1. A deeper understanding and knowledge of chosen areas of European Business law and policy, and their interaction with analogous Member State law and policy
  2. Schooling in the applicable Treaty law and legislation, the academic literature and trends in the case-law of the Court of Justice.
  3. Acquisition of advanced legal research skills
  4. Advanced ability to communicate the results of research through presentations, debating and writing of term papers and dissertations
  5. Advanced ability to identify and analyse complex problems from a legal perspective in context

    6. Advanced ability to read beyond legal doctrine and to evaluate the relevance and importance of other disciplines for legal analysis.

Apart from taking three compulsory subjects as specified from time to time, you will be able to select further study units of your choice from a list of business law subjects as well as to write, under full supervision, a dissertation on a subject of your choice. In all cases, there is guidance in your choice from members of the Department. You will therefore acquire a depth of knowledge and range of skills across the broad area of European Business Law, with specific expertise in the actual subjects chosen for study. For each subject chosen, the knowledge acquired will range over the understanding of the relevant Treaty provisions and the laws and other acts adopted under them, study and critical analysis of the academic literature as well as the caselaw of the Court of Justice of the Union, and knowledge of relevant Member State legislation and court judgments. Practice is given due importance and practitioners' journals are frequently referred to on many of the courses. This approach develops interpretational and applicational skills against the backdrop of sound theoretical knowledge and understanding. The knowledge and skills acquired are applicable in law practice, in adjudication, and in further studies to Ph.D level should the student wish to pursue an academic career in Malta or abroad.

This postgraduate academic programme in European Business Law provides students with an in-depth education in European Business law. It allows for specialisation in a number of areas of Business law such as IT law, Business Enterprise (Company) Law, Consumer Law, Competition law, Financial Services Law, Labour Law, and a number of other areas as indicated in the programme of study.

It follows from the above that Master of Laws graduates in European Business Law will benefit from a distinct advantage in accessing high level practice, national and international, and employment in a large number of positions requiring expertise in European Business Law. Many graduates will go straight into high level practice with Maltese or overseas law firms, or with other organisations, including companies, banks, financial services firms, the Union institutions themselves, and employers, directly in the field of specialisation on which they focus while on the degree. Others will find that their already existing career has benefited. A student can follow the degree full-time over one academic year while others may prefer to take the degree on a part-time basis over two years. Finally, for those aiming for an academic career, the degree provides an excellent basis for the pursuit of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in law.
