Information for International applicants

Applicants must be in possession of:

  1. a first cycle degree from this University with at least Second Class (Honours) in a discipline related to Sustainable Energy or in any other area of study of the proposed research which the Board considers as appropriate, with a minimum of 240 ECTS credits, obtained in the ten years previous to registration for the Course or
  2. a qualification and work experience deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in paragraph (a). The admission of applicants under this paragraph shall be made conditional on the results of an interview, provided that such applicants may be required to complete a preparatory programme as specified below.

Applicants may be asked to demonstrate competence in those skills required by the nature of the proposed research via an extended interview and the submission of appropriate documentation, provided that where deficiencies are identified applicants shall be required to take specific study-units intended to compensate for the deficit.

Applicants whose first degree was obtained more than ten years previous to registration for the Course may also be admitted provided that they produce sufficient proof of their competence to follow the Course with profit. The Board may, at its discretion, require such applicants to follow a preparatory programme.

This programme of study is also offered on a part-time basis. Please consult the Registrar's website for more information pertaining to courses offered by the University.

This programme is mainly offered if you are a graduate with a background in an area related to Sustainable Energy. Research projects normally investigate the area of renewable energy and energy efficiency, covering topics ranging from new technology to policy, economic and environmental issues. Research topics in other areas related to Sustainable Energy may also be considered if an academic supervisor with the necessary expertise is available.

In addition to the compulsory study-units, students are required to choose a study-unit to the value of 5 ECTS credits from the elective study-units on offer during the year.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science in Sustainable Energy - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Institute for Sustainable Energy.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Describe the scientific work performed in a written manner by means of technical reports, publications and a dissertation.
  • Apply analytical and critical evaluation skills of published literature.
  • Assess the advantages and disadvantages deriving from the particular mix of energy resources available.
  • Evaluate different energy policies and regulations to achieve the goals formulated by economies/societies.
  • Tackle basic budgeting and write and follow up on checklists for successful project implementation and running.

As a holder of the M.Sc. in Sustainable Energy, you will be able to enter a career related to sustainable energy with the recognition of a qualified researcher who will provide insights and projects to enhance and tackle issues related to sustainable energy.

Access to further studies at a doctorate level will be available in the University of Malta or a foreign institution abroad.
