Applicants must be in possession of:

  1. a first cycle degree classified with at least Second Class (Honours) in one of the following areas: Psychology, Education, Communication Therapy, Social Work, Youth and Community Studies, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Nursing, or any other area deemed relevant by the Faculty Board, together with a minimum of one year's work experience related to their first degree or
  2. a first cycle degree classified with at least Second Class (Honours) in any other area together with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education in any area and a minimum of one year's work experience in education or
  3. a teacher's certificate with at least five years' teaching experience and other suitable qualifications obtained following their first cycle degree or the teacher's certificate or
  4. any first cycle degree followed by a recognised teaching qualification together with at least three years' experience in an education setting.

This masters' is a transdisciplinary professional masters focusing on the inclusion of disabled persons and persons with mental health problems in schools and in the community. The masters is open to various professionals (educators, psychologists, psychology graduates, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, physiotherapists, nurses and social workers) if you are intending to develop your competencies in inclusive community-based and person-centred transdisciplinary collaborative teamwork. The course shares some core study units with the other streams developing a common discourse with professionals working in other fields and, at the same time, with other practitioners working with disabled persons and persons with mental health problems. The overriding theme is the development of person-centred programmes facilitating self-determination and quality of life for active participation in education and community life.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master in Access to Education under the auspices of the Faculty of Education.

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

  • Contribute to contemporary international and national debate in the field of inclusive education
  • Produce and communicate evidence-informed, reasoned argument in writing and orally
  • Demonstrate how concepts, theories and evidence can inform an understanding of issues and practice
  • Carry out a focused inclusive education inquiry into educational practice
  • Enhance professional practice through greater knowledge, skills, understanding and awareness.
