Information for International applicants

Applicants shall be in possession of:

  1. a first cycle degree in Science with Earth Systems as a main area of study obtained with Second Class Honours or better or
  2. a first cycle degree in Science obtained with Second Class Honours or better in an area that is deemed relevant by the Board.

Applicants with a first cycle degree in Science with Earth Systems as a main area of study obtained with Third Class Honours may be admitted if they show evidence of significant experience in work relevant to the area of study of the Course, obtained after their first cycle degree. The admission of applicants under this paragraph may be made conditional on the results of an interview.

The MSc in Environmental Monitoring and Assessment will provide you with the knowledge and expertise to work in environmental science. The industry is increasing its demands for graduates who are qualified in this field, and the course will therefore train you in monitoring approaches, handling of environmental data and assessing observed changes for the sake and responsible use of environmental resources. To ensure the responsible governance of our environment, the course will provide you with substantial and specific expertise. You will carry out environmental assessments and audits, handle environmental information, and work with geospatial data.

Students aiming to complete the Master of Science as full-time students are to treat all these study units as compulsory. However, students can also opt to complete individual or multiple study units leading to the award of a University certificate and/or diploma at the end of the academic year.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 for the Degree of Master of Environmental Monitoring and Assessment - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Institute of Earth Systems.

By the end of the course, you will:

  • Have knowledge of the major aspects of the environmental monitoring and assessment, including key concepts of environmental science, earth observation, environmental impacts assessment and monitoring of air, soil, water, habitat and biodiversity.
  • Demonstrate skills in the environmental monitoring and assessment, taking into consideration the interacting components of Earth Systems.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of advanced environmental monitoring, facts, principles and practical aspects.
  • Communicate information, ideas, problems, and solutions to both specialist and non-specialist audiences orally and in writing.
  • Retrieve and cite information, in relation to primary and secondary information sources, including retrieval of environmental information through online computer searches.
  • Evaluate, interpret and synthesise environmental information and related data.
