  1. the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) from the Faculty of Health Sciences in an area of study which should be directly related to the area in which the research is to be carried out or
  2. a Bachelor's degree obtained with at least a Second Class (Honours) in a discipline deemed by the Board as being closely related to the area of study in which the research is to be carried out or
  3. a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be equivalent to the qualifications listed in (a) and (b).

During the first year of the Course, students may be required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for work which may bring them in contact with the clinical environment. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

If you are a midwife in possession of a first degree, then this course programme provides you the opportunity to develop advanced research skills. You will undertake a research project on an approved subject under the supervision of an appointed supervisor. You will be able to empirically investigate aspects of the ambit of the practice with the ultimate aim of extending the understanding and knowledge in their field. The programme consists of two components: a 10 ECTS research methods study unit and an 80 ECTS dissertation.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 1 of academic year 2024-25 (October 2024) and continue up to the end of Semester 2 of academic year 2026-27 (June 2027).
 

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

By the end of the course you will:

  • Learn, develop and apply skills related to scientific enquiry.
  • Search, organise and critique literature.
  • Select an appropriate scientific methodology and a method of data generation in order to explore a research question.
  • Develop a research proposal, undertake research in the field and produce a Masters' level dissertation.

You will be able to learn, develop and apply skills related to scientific enquiry. These will involve searching, organising and critiquing literature; selecting an appropriate scientific methodology and a method of data generation in order to explore a research question; developing a research proposal; undertaking research in the field and producing a Masters' level dissertation.

As part of this program the student will be required to seek ethical approval from the Faculty/University Research Ethics Committee if appropriate. It also provides the student with the opportunity to experience conducting and writing up a research project, presenting it to his peers and to add to the research/evidence base of the profession. Candidates will also be in a position to develop skills in disseminating research findings in the relevant fora and peer reviewed publications.
