Applicants must be in possession of:

  1. the degree of Bachelor of Science with at least Second Class Honours in an area of study deemed by the Board to be relevant to the proposed area of study and obtained in the 10 years previous to registration for the Course or
  2. the Bachelor of Science with Third Class Honours in an area of study deemed by the Board to be relevant to the proposed area of study and obtained in the 10 years previous to registration for the Course, provided that the applicants have obtained other qualifications, including relevant experience, following their first cycle degree. The Board may, at its discretion, require such applicants to follow a preparatory programme.

The Board, at its discretion, may also recommend the admission of applicants in possession of a Bachelor of Science with at least Category II in an area of study deemed by the Board to be relevant to the proposed area of study and obtained in the 10 years previous to registration for the Course, provided that the admission of such applicants shall be made conditional on the result of an interview and in such cases they shall be required to follow a preparatory programme.

The Board, at its discretion, may also recommend the admission of applicants with a first cycle degree deemed by the Board to be relevant to the proposed area of study and obtained in the 10 years previous to registration for the Course, provided that the admission of such applicants may be conditional on the result of an interview and in such cases they may be required to follow a preparatory programme.

Applicants whose first degree was obtained more than 10 years previous to registration for the Course may also be admitted following an interview to ascertain their capability to follow the Course. The Board may, at its discretion, require such applicants to follow a preparatory programme.

The MSc in Operations Research, as part of the masters' degree offerings by the Department of Statistics and Operations Research has been designed as a continuation in advanced studies in Probability, Statistics and Operations Research. The MSc course ranges widely over a large number of advanced topics in the main areas. The structure of the course centres around a dissertation in which theory and application come together in a logically coherent manner, complementing one another in the process of mastering a repertoire of mathematical, computational and statistical techniques. The acquired skills are assembled into a plan for solving problems originating within various applications. We also accept dissertations which are of a more theoretical bent provided the level of the mathematics involved is of a sufficient level. Once a plan for dissertation has been formulated, three supporting study units are selected to help the you acquire the techniques and theoretical underpinnings of relevant areas at a sufficiently deep level.

The programme of studies for MSc in Operations Research, as part of the masters degree offerings by the Department of Statistics and Operations Research has been designed as a continuation in advanced studies in Probability, Statistics and Operations Research. Selection of study-units and dissertation construction are contemplated with the following considerations in mind:
ՠStudent background skills (or lack of them) in relevant areas
ՠA target of proficiency which involves mathematical and logical rigour
ՠA full appreciation of the support which the chosen subjects provide within the areas the student is working on
ՠAwareness of current advances in all relevant subjects
ՠProficiency with reference to the various computational issues encountered

Important note: This sequence of study-units is a comprehensive list which includes topics regularly registered by the Department of Statistics and Operations Research with university authorities for POSSIBLE use by postgraduate students as part of their courses. The selection of study-units for such purposes has to be done in conformity with departmental policies and through advice, consultation and approval by the relevant authorities.

Students are required to register for study-units equivalent to 30 ECTS credits and a 60 ECTS credit dissertation to a total of 90 ECTS credits.

* Work on the dissertation is expected to start in Semester 2 of academic year 2024-25 (February 2025) and continues up to the end of the course.
The elective study-units start in Semester 2 of academic year 2024-25 (February 2025) and continue up to the end of Semester 1 of academic year 2025-26 (February 2026).
 

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and the Bye-Laws for the degree of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Science.

By the end of the programme, you will be able to:

  • Have an awareness of current advances in all relevant subjects.
  • Possess proficiency with reference to the various computational issues encountered.
  • Enhance and widen the experience of dealing competently with the notions of uncertainty and randomness in a logically valid and mathematically sophisticated way.
  • Identify probabilistic, statistical and/or operations research contexts within practical problems, and subsequently to produce correct formulations.
  • Utilise your fluency and confidence in accessing and consulting research work, including sophisticated theoretical constructs, in the pursuit of devising solutions for problems of a quantitative nature.
