Applicants shall satisfy the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission Regulations.

The Certificate Course may be taken concurrently with any University undergraduate or postgraduate course, whether followed on a full-time or part-time basis.

This course is open to University of Malta current students only - Information about the application process will be forwarded by the Faculty of Arts to students in due course.

The Certificate in Language Proficiency in French will train you as a beginner to become proficient in French. The French language is the second most widely learned foreign language after English, and the ninth most widely spoken language in the world. An ability to understand and communicate in French will make you an advantageous candidate when applying at the international job market, as it opens the doors of companies in France and in other French-speaking parts of the world. The course will train you in language skills up to Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.

Requirement for award of Certificate in Language Proficiency (French): 30 ECTS credits

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Certificate in Language Proficiency and the Diploma in Language Proficiency under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • use the four language skills in French - speaking, listening, reading and writing - at a B1 level, in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
  • develop positive attitudes towards cultural diversity and intercultural communication;
  • engage in a range of communicative scenarios through appropriate speech acts;
  • understand a variety of written texts and oral conversations at a level-appropriate length;
  • express yourself fluently and fairly accurately in writing;
  • use a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures to express yourself.

Non EU Applicants:

If students are following a FT course at UM - No fees apply.
If students are not following a FT course at UM - Total Tuition Fee: €4,250. Yr1 - €1,420 - Yr2 - €1,420 - Yr3 - €1,410

The Certificate in Language Proficiency aims to enable you to learn French not only for communication purposes, but also within the framework of a career pathway as a useful, additional professional qualification. This course will also have the added benefit of preparing you, should you desire, for an international qualification in the shape of the DELF exams.
