DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will give a synoptic view of the evolution of photography and cinema. It will introduce the student to the socio-cultural context through which new technical possibilities allowed for the evolution of new canons in artistic practice. The study-unit will specifically discuss the role played by new media in the evolution of a wider visual culture from the 19th century to the present. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to: - familiarise students with key technical and historical events that allowed for the growth of photography and the moving image - give students glimpses in important players, ideas, exhibitions, publications and debates pertinet to the subject - introduce students to the necessary terminology Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - discuss the evolution of photography and film. - gain new insights into the media and apply them to their own creative production. - make use of correct terminology pertinent to the two media. - contextualise the role photography and cinema have in the History of Art. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - develop a critical approach to audio-visual media. - manage, produce and present a creative personal project. - develop a more acute sensibility to the interdisciplinary dialogue between photography, cinema and other fields from the Humanities.
