MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 8

DEPARTMENT Applied Biomedical Science

DESCRIPTION Placement in the Pathology laboratories to observe and learn the practical aspects of working in a Biochemistry and Genetics laboratory.

General:
- Sample receipt and processing;
- Health and safety.

Biochemistry:
- Special tests such as HbA1c, Aldolase, VMA, Lithium, Bence Jones, FOB;
- Point of care testing.

Genetics:
- Special tests such as real-time PCR, IEF, HPLC for Haemoglobin and globin chain variants, spectrophotometry and electrophoresis;
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team;
- Genetic counselling.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to expose students to the general running and administration of a clinical biochemistry lab and a genetics lab within the hospital pathology labs with a special focus on:
- specialised biochemisry tests;
- specialised genetic tests;
- point of care testing and the importance of genetic counseling.

This study-unit will allow students to experience the practical aspects of:
- sample receipt and processing;
- working within a multidisciplinary team;
- carrying out point of care testing;
- liaising with a (genetics) clinic.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Report on the procedures used in special sample receipt and processing;
- Interpret test results, equipment QC reports and equipment fault reports;
- Recognise the importance of counseling both pre- and post-testing for inherited diseases.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Carry out a variety of biochemical and genetic tests, both manual and automated;
- Carry out case studies, collating the necessary data which will determin the sequence of further testing;
- Carry out point of care testing;
- Work within a multidisciplinary team together with clinical staff.
