CODE ABS3002

TITLE Advanced Practical: Cellular Pathology

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 8

DEPARTMENT Applied Biomedical Science

DESCRIPTION Placement in the Pathology labs to observe and learn the practical aspects of working in a Histology lab and a Cytology lab.

General:
- Sample receipt, handling and processing of liquid and solid tissue samples;
- Health and safety practices.

Histology:
- Special tests such as Immunohistochemistry and preparation of frozen sections, cryostat cutting procedure, rapid H&E staining;
- Preparation of cell blocks and slides;
- Cut-up and fixing of surgical samples;
- Immunonohistochemistry staining methods (PAP, ABC, etc).

Cytology:
- Special tests such as fine needle aspiration;
- Slide preparation and staining;
- Immunocytochemical staining of cytology specimens.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to expose students to the general running and administration of a cytology lab and a histology lab within the hospital pathology labs with a special focus on:
- Handling of solid tissue specimens;
- Cut-up, block preparation, slide preparation and staining;
- Immunohistochemistry and fluorescent microscopy.

This study-unit will allow students to experience the practical aspects of:
- Sample receipt and processing;
- Fixing of samples and preparation of appropriate specimen slides;
- Long-term storage of slides and tissue blocks;
- Specialised staining using fluorescent antibodies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Report on the procedures used in special sample receipt and processing;
- Produce a Vertical Audit - detailing the route of a specimen from patient to final result, including sampling method, sample reception, registration and processing, result reporting, authorisation and issuing.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Carry out a variety of histological and cytological tests;
- Carry out case studies, collating the necessary data which will determine the sequence of further testing;
- Stain slides appropriately;
- Handle hazardous reagents and equipment safely;
- Fully explain various medical terms.
