TITLE Advanced Practical: Microbiology

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 8

DEPARTMENT Applied Biomedical Science

DESCRIPTION Placement in the Pathology labs to observe and learn the practical aspects of working in different areas of a Microbiology lab.

General:
- Sample receipt, handling and processing of microbiological samples;
- Health and safety practices when handling micro-organisms and microbiological waste.

Bacteriology:
- Special tests such as TB processing, blood cultures, parasitology, special stains for bacterial identification;
- Automated equipment for culturing and identification of pathogens.

Mycology:
- Special tests such as susceptibility testing for yeasts, galactomannan antigen test.

Virology:
- Special tests such as automated enzyme immunoassays and viral molecular diagnostics.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to expose students to the general running and administration of a microbiology lab within the hospital pathology labs with a special focus on:
- Specialised bacteriology, mycology and virology tests;
- Handling of pathogenic bacteria, fungi and viruses;
- Handling and disposal of microbiological waste.

This study-unit will allow students to experience the practical aspects of:
- Sample receipt and processing;
- Culturing of bacteria, fungi and viruses;
- Identification of bacteria, fungi and viruses;
- Gandling of hazardous and non-hazardous waste.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Report on the procedures used in special sample receipt and processing;
- Report on the procedures used when dealing with inadequate samples;
- Interpret test results;
- Describe the health and safetly protocols that need to be followed when handling pathogenic micro-organisms and microbiological waste.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Carry out a variety of bacteriology, parasitology, mycology and virology tests, both manual and automated;
- Carry out case studies, collating the necessary data which will determine the sequence of further testing;
- Handle micro-organisms safely;
- Process and dispose of microbiological waste safely.
