DESCRIPTION Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to provide a basic understanding of physiological and pathological cellular responses to variable stimuli on different tissue structures. This study-unit also provides an introduction to mechanisms of carcinogenesis, together with an overview of cytology specimen types, collection methods and diagnostic values.

Content:

- Metaplasia
- Genetic basis of Cancer
- Oncogenes and Proto-oncogenes
- The Cell Cycle
- Human Papilloma Virus and Cervical Cancer
- Glandular Lesions of the Cervix
- Serous Effusions
- Fine Needle Aspirations
- Breast; Specimen Types and Collection Methods
- Lung; Specimen Types and Collection Methods
- Lymph Node Cytology
- Thyroid and Salivary Gland Cytology
- Urinary Tract Cytology.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand cellular physiological and pathological responses to stimuli;
- Gain knowledge of cytology specimen types and collection methods;
- Appreciate the diagnostic values of cytology specimens;
- Understand basic genetic mechanisms which may lead to neoplastic transformation.
