DESCRIPTION | This is a lecture based study-unit with a specific focus on designing research projects, the ethical considerations involved when dealing with human genetic research, the analysis of data generated by experimental work and its interpretation in the context of current knowledge. The students will also be instructed in methods of scientific writing, selection of appropriate statistical analyses as well as how to critically analyse relevant literature. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims at introducing students to the ancillary skills needed in the field of advanced molecular genetics. It will help students develop the skills necessary to carry out scientific research: - Designing a study which is scientifically sound - Learn to collect, analyse and interpret scientific data objectively in the context of scientific literature Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Criticise appraisal of scientific literature. - Utilise of appropriate statistical techniques. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Produce and present a piece of scientific writing which could take the form of a paper or a poster - Design a research project paying suitable attention to ethical considerations, time-planning, budgeting and scientific knowledge Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: Scientific literature related to the research subject. |
