DESCRIPTION | The study-unit is introduced with a discussion of main concepts, models, principles and practices in the field of curriculum studies, as well as both internal and external quality assurance. This is accompanied by a critical review of the relevance of these in formal and non-formal adult education, training and development, with reference to the global, EU and Maltese contexts. Students will also engage with case studies that expose strengths and weaknesses of methodologies and pedagogies used in curriculum design, development, evaluation and quality assurance in the fields formal and non-formal adult education, training and development. Study-Unit Aims: This study-unit aims to: - Introduce students to main concepts, models, principles and practices in the field of curriculum studies and quality assurance. - Provide students with sufficient grounding in curriculum design, development, evaluation and quality assurance (both internal and external) relevant to formal and non-formal adult education, training and development. - Prepare students to be the adult educators and trainers of today and tomorrow. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Discuss philosophical, pedagogical and social foundations underlying curriculum studies and quality assurance, with focus on national, European and transnational/international contexts; - Identify and list approaches, methods and resources currently used in formal and non-formal adult education, training and development, as well as for internal and external quality assurance; and - Review case studies on curriculum design, development, evaluation and quality assurance. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Develop basic curriculum design, development, evaluation and embedded internal quality assurance strategies; - Prepare for external quality assurance processes and procedures, and integrate the outcomes into internal quality assurance outcomes and procedures; - Compare case studies on curriculum design, development, evaluation and quality assurance; and - Analyze curriculum design, development, evaluation and quality assurance strategies in formal and non-formal adult education, training and development settings.
