DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores the social construction and meaning of gender and sexualities in society. The discussion will also delve into socio-political and cultural contexts, with specific reference to the local context.
It will introduce the main feminist theories and key concepts on gender, gender identity, sexuality and power, including violence, and discuss their relevance to adult learning settings.
The discussion will also tackle intersections of gender and/or sexuality identities with other social identities such as disability, class, religion and ethnicity; with attention to how such intersections impact adult education and training contexts.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to provide engagement with the:
1. Social construction and meaning of gender and sexualities in society;
2. Relevance of main feminist theories and key concepts on gender, gender identity, sexuality and power to adult learning settings; and
3. Intersections of gender and/or sexuality identities with other social identities (e.g., disability, class, religion and ethnicity) and their impacts on adult education and training contexts.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Identify tenets of main feminist theories;
2. Define the concepts pertinent to gender and sexualities;
3. Discuss ways in which gender and sexuality are socially constructed;
4. Identify (potential) intersections of gender with other social identities, e.g., disability, class, religion and ethnicity; and
5. Identify (potential) impacts of genders and sexualities on adult education, training and development on adult education, training and development policies, initiatives and outcomes.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Apply a gendered perspective to the analysis of adult education and training settings;
2. Apply a gendered perspective to the planning of a set adult education and training initiative; and
3. Analyze the local context's engagement with gender and sexuality diversity, with attention adult education and training policy and initiatives.
