DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces media and communication practices for higher education professionals in the context of inclusive open and networked higher education. Tools, platforms and applications will be critically reviewed for the context and purposes of teaching and learning in higher education, considering the range of learners and educational levels. Principles of user experience, usability and accessibility in technology mediated teaching and learning will be examined and applied. HE practitioner roles and responsibilities will be discussed in light of Higher Education institution policy.

Considerations for digital connectivity, accessibility, usability and literacy will be examined.

Creation, co-creation and peer review of Open Educational Resources (OER) will provide practical experience. OER content, tools, platforms and applications will be critically reviewed and evaluated for purpose and context of learning and teaching in higher education. The study-unit will introduce established OER repositories in context of critical analysis for quality, authenticity and trustworthiness for learning and teaching in HE.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to provide students with hands on knowledge and experience of existing content resources, tools for communication and creating open content for use in learning and teaching in higher education, especially focusing on collaboration, peer review and connectivity. This study-unit aims to describe the considerations and digital techniques of using, creating and sharing open educational resources in networked higher education learning.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify suitable open educational resources (OER) for areas of HE learning and teaching (L&T) praxis
- Critically consider and discuss the pedagogical quality and reliability of OER in HE settings
- Select suitable tools and platforms for authorship of OER for HE L&T
- Critically consider and appraise OER
- Critically consider different roles and responsibilities of HE practitioners in relation to policy and legal obligations of employer institutions relating to use, authoring and dissemination of OER
- Identify platforms and apps suitable for different levels and scenarios teaching in the higher education area
- Identify challenges and key considerations of open educational resource provision for different learners in different contexts

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Communicate clearly and effectively in online scenarios
- Develop core skills using digital software, web tools and applications for developing digital content
- Critically consider and apply usability and accessibility standards in digital L&T
- Critically consider and apply good practice principles for creating digital content and writing for the Internet
- Discerningly use core technologies for evaluating accessibility and usability of digital content

ADDITIONAL NOTES Pre-requisite Qualifications: None, but offered as MQF 7 participants are expected to have adequate knowledge and skills for them to adequately engage in postgraduate level studies individually and in connectedness with others.
