DESCRIPTION Description:

This study-unit seeks to familiarise participants with the concepts and skills that a user of financial information needs to be conversant with in order to be able to prepare the various reports that are required so as evaluate, and gain a meaningful insight into, the multi-faceted aspects of financial control. Students will be introduced to the application of management accounting techniques in situations where different strategic aspects of planning, decision-making and control are involved. They will also be introduced to the techniques used by firms to take strategic decisions with respect to long-term investments and to the firm’s capital structure as well as on the various stakeholders. The study-unit is intended for those students who do not have any prior accounting background.

Topics covered:

a) The scope and objectives of Management Accounting and Financial Strategy
b) Cost-volume-profit analysis
c) Relevant costs for decision-making
d) Costing and pricing in a competitive environment
e) Budgeting
f) Budgetary control
g) Making capital investment decisions
h) The cost of capital and shareholder value analysis
i) Developing a dividend policy
j) The capital structure decision and its strategic implications

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this study-unit participants should have developed a sound appreciation of the different methodologies underlying the reports prepared by management accountants and the financial strategies of corporate entities. Besides recommending the appropriate financial strategy, they should also be able to deduce which type of financial information is appropriate for the particular strategy that is being contemplated by the entity.
