DESCRIPTION The goal of the study-unit is to continue to build upon what was begun in the first term. Students will continue their introduction to theories of dance pedagogy, and delve further into specific disciplines such as movement analysis and somatic practices. This unit will also explore cross-disciplinary approaches within pedagogical dance practices, as well as the continuation of mapping the potential for using dance as an educational tool. The goal is to begin to equip students with a foundation for the practice of teaching dance both within studio and mainstream classroom settings.

Study-unit Aims:

- To provide a historical and theoretical foundation of dance and education in order to allow the student to develop knowledge and understanding of dance pedagogy.
- To expose students to multiple perspectives on teaching and learning dance and movement in order to begin to broaden their understanding of dance as an educational endeavour at both the primary and secondary levels.
- To examine varieties of techniques for teaching various forms of dance including codified, non-codified, and cultural dance forms.
- To establish an understanding of pedagogical frameworks and methodologies.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Engage with past and present pedagogical theories with a focus on the development of a broad perspective of teaching and learning.
- Identify systems of dance and movement analysis as tools for teaching.
- Learn specific somatic approaches and understand their uses for facilitating the teaching of dance technique.
- Develop cross-curricular approaches to dance pedagogy and their application within education settings.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Critically engage with diverse theoretical approaches to dance pedagogy.
- Investigate and interpret multiple methods to teaching dance including movement analysis, and somatic approaches.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the development of critical and creative thinking skills through the use dance and movement.
- Engage with cross disciplinary methods for creating dance-based curriculum.
