DESCRIPTION From social and identity development to general psychological issues in education, covering childhood, adolescence, the adult learner and issues of ageing, the study-unit prepares the student to understand, situate, and face diversity and change within the classroom. The study-unit covers the importance of social behaviour and attachment, developmental theories, and different stages of human language, social, cognitive, and moral development in relation to the teaching and learning of dance.

Study-unit Aims:

- To provide the student-teacher with in-depth understanding and skills that will allow her/him to develop her/his practice.
- To facilitate the questioning, explanation, and overall awareness of social and psychological issues which might arise within the classroom.
- To provide the student-teacher with the necessary tools to deal initially with problematic situations.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- enumerate the main stages of psychological development relative to dance practice during a person's lifespan, and explain the main changes that are undergone through these periods.
- identify and synthesise main developmental theories and apply them to the teaching and learning of dance.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- analyse particular situations, behaviours, or reactions within a dance class setting and explain them in terms of a person's psychosocial development.
- identify the main aspects of psychological development theories as applied to dance, and create pedagogical strategies as preventive and anticipatory measures towards the most common concerns and coping strategies for other possible issues.
