DESCRIPTION The study-unit focuses on several frameworks through which dance can be studied, introducing specific research approaches for the study of dance in relation to pedagogical implications and uses. Through case studies and examples, the study-unit provides an introduction to various types of scholarly work in the discipline of dance. It will include the following frameworks: race, gender, culture, (intercultural studies and identity), and politics.

Study-unit Aims:

- To introduce the students to deeper study of some of the theoretical and methodological stances which have been applied in scholarly dance literature.
- To give the student opportunities to consider new kinds of approaches to question, position, and enhance their teaching.
- To present a variety of research methods.
- To delineate common approaches for investigating dance.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate understanding of a variety of research methods and frameworks.
- Formulate ideas of interpretation, significance, context and aesthetics in dance.
- Investigate and analyse the subject matter, analytical framework and literature of given case studies.
- Propose their own case studies and examples, exploring them within appropriate frameworks.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify appropriate approaches for application to particular case studies in relation to pedagogy of dance.
- Apply particular approaches to case studies within dance education.
- Extrapolate and synthesise particular methodologies of approach.
- Create/design and discuss individual ideas for research topics.
