DESCRIPTION This study-unit gives recognition of prior learning to formal ab initio flight training. It recognises the practical (flying) training and exercises carried out in relation to the attainment of a Private Pilot License (EASA PPL(A) or equivalent). The study unit covers the 19 exercises associated with flight instruction for the award of PPL(A) or equivalent:

Exercise 1: Familiarisation with the aeroplane and emergency drills; Exercise 2: Preparation for and action after flight (including internal and external checks, serviceability documents, power checks, etc.); Exercise 3: flight exercise; Exercise 4: Effects of controls - primary, secondary, power and trimming; Exercise 5: startup and taxi; Exercise 6: straight and level flight; Exercise 7: climbing flight; Exercise 8: descending flight; Exercise 9: turning flight; Exercise 10: slow flight and stalling; Exercise 11: spin avoidance; Exercise 12: takeoff and climb to downwind position; Exercise 13: circuit, approach and landing; Exercise 14: first solo; Exercise 15: steep turns, recovery from stall in the turn, recovery from unusual attitudes, including spiral dives; Exercise 16: forced landing without power; Exercise 17: precautionary landing; Exercise 18: navigation flight, including cross-country; Exercise 19: basic instrument flight.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to provide the necessary flight training for the award of a Private Pilot License (Aeroplane) certificate.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Use the correct phraseology for radio communications;
- Explain the value of checklists for safe flight;
- Explain the practical implications of aircraft performance;
- Describe the control and behavior of an aircraft in flight ;
- Explain how to correctly recover from a stall and other unusual attitudes;
- Describe the navigation tasks associated with cross-country flying.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Prepare the aircraft for flight;
- Successfully follow checklists and execute drills;
- Correctly handle the aircraft during startup, taxi, takeoff, climb, cruise, descent, landing and shutdown;
- Recover from abnormal conditions such as stall and spiral dives;
- Communicate effectively over wireless radio;
- Carry out emergency drills, including aborted takeoff, missed approach, and forced landing;
- Use basic radio navigational aids;
- Carry out VFR cross-country solo.
