DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces the fundamental concept of the technical and maintenance organization, as well as basic concepts of SMS and Human factors.

The study-unit covers:

- Review of Part M and Part 145 Requirements
- The “Org Chart”
- Responsibilities
- Design of a Technical Organization
- Design of a Maintenance Organization
- Base and Line Maintenance
- The “new” concepts: SMS and Human Factors

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims:

- To describe the differences between Part 145 and Part M responsibilities;
- To describe a qualitative dimension of a technical and maintenance organization;
- To explain the differences between line and base maintenance;
- To examine different paths for performing maintenance.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain the basic meaning of “Airworthiness”;
- Explain the allocation of different responsibilities and tasks;
- Explain the basic certification requirements;
- Examine and explain a work order;
- Describe the significance SMS;
- Evaluate basic HF criticalities.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply the knowledge in following documentation and communications in technical and maintenance activities;
- Evaluate the elements of a CRS (Certificate of release to service and a work report);
- Apply the knowledge to establish if a structure is fulfilling basic rules requirement;
- Apply the knowledge to address criticalities in the working flow;
- Propose an SMS table;
- Apply the knowledge in ensuring a safe work environment and consider human factor related events.
