UM LEVEL 04 - Years 4, 5 in Modular UG or PG Cert Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT Institute of Aerospace Technologies

DESCRIPTION This study-unit gives recognition of prior learning in formal professional pilot training in Operational Procedures (including for multi-crew operations) and aircraft handling studied for Commercial Pilot and Air Transport Pilot licenses, typically under training programmes such as those approved by EASA or similar.

The study-unit covers the following areas normally covered in commercial and air transport pilot training:

Operational procedures:
Operational requirements – Operator certification; operational procedures; all weather operations; instruments and equipment; communication and navigation equipment; flight crew and cabin crew; manuals logs and records; flight and duty time limitations and rest requirements; transport of dangerous goods by air;
Long range flights – flight management; transoceanic and polar flights; MNPS airspace; ETOPS;

Special operational procedures and hazards – operating manual; icing conditions; bird-strike risk and avoidance; noise abatement; fire and smoke; decompression of pressurised cabin; windsheer and microburst; wake turbulence; security (unlawful events); emergency and precautionary landings; safety aspects; transport of dangerous goods; contaminated runways.

Multi Crew Coordination (MCC):
Theoretical and practical elements to achieve the competencies of:
1) Communication (knowledge to include human factors, TEM and CRM)
2) Leadership and team working
3) Situational awareness
4) Workload management
5) Problem solving and decision making
6) Monitoring and cross-checking
7) Task sharing
8) Use of checklists
9) Briefings
10) Flight management
11) FMS use
12) Systems normal operations
13) Systems abnormal and emergency operations
14) Environment, weather and ATC.

The responsibilities and roles of the Pilot Flying (PF), Pilot Monitoring (PM), Crew Member 1 (CM1) and Crew Member 2 (CM2).

MCC flying/simulator experience in the commercial air transport environment:
- Pre-flight preparation and checks;
- Normal and rejected take-offs;
- Normal and abnormal operation of aircraft systems, use of check lists;
- Emergency procedures;
- Instrument flight procedures;
- Approach and landing - including normal, crosswind, OEI and go-around;
- Upset Prevention and Recovery (UPR) in large transport category aircraft (including upsets due to stall, CAT, wake turbulence, turbulence, weather, updrafts and downdrafts; recovering from unusual attitudes; handling wind shear);

15 hours flying experience as PF and PM.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to cover advanced operational procedures, including operating in a multi-crew environment, focussing on air transport pilot operations. It also covers practical flying experience in multi-crew cockpit environments.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the operational requirements for various operational contexts, including all weather operation, carriage of dangerous goods, transoceanic and polar flight and ETOPS;
- State flight and duty time limitations and rest requirements;
- State the requirements relating to crew, aircraft equipment and documentation;
- Describe various special operating procedures, including those associated with icing, bird-strike, noise abatement, fire and smoke, decompression, wind sheer and wake turbulence, unlawful events and emergency landings;
- Describe the various multi-crew coordination skills required in commercial air transport operations;
- Describe the roles of PF, PM, CM1 and CM2 in commercial air transport operations.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Apply the knowledge to commercial and air transport operations in their career as pilots.
