DESCRIPTION The study-unit is based on an intensive programme of reading and written work which is related to the student's field of research. It is conducted on an individual basis; students work largely on their own, without the need to attend formal lectures, although tutorials will be held every fortnight to discuss at length the topic which the student is researching.

Study-unit Aims:

- To enhance the students' research skills with a particular focus on the English and the Italian literary tradition;
- To improve the students' critical thinking and analytical ability;
- To enable the students to demonstrate a command over their field of interest both orally and in writing through regular presentations and short papers.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Apply a wide range of theoretical and critical approaches to the close reading of literary and filmic texts;
- Analyse literary and filmic texts within a broadly comparative context with particular reference to the relationship between the English and the Italian tradition;
- Critically discuss both orally and in writing the English and Italian texts that have been assigned during the tutorials;
- Apply the theories and methodological approaches which have been acquired through the readings to the specific field of research.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss Literature within a broadly comparative context;
- Demonstrate critical skills in the reading of both literary and non-literary texts in more than one language;
- Formally articulate his or her ideas on Comparative Literature and demonstrate his or her presentation standards;
- Draw on his or her improved expressive potential on Literature to the understanding of adjacent fields such as Film Studies.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

Since the aim of the study-unit in Directed Studies is to give the student the opportunity to conduct individualised research under the supervision of a specialist in the field, the readings will be determined by the student's specific area of interest.
