TITLE Using Audio-Visual Modes in Language Teaching

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 2

DEPARTMENT Technology and Entrepreneurship Education

DESCRIPTION This study-unit initially intends to define the term 'audio-visual' and later to identify a number of audio-visual resources which are commonly (and others less commonly) found in language classes. These include music videos, songs and film bites among others.

The aim of the study-unit will be to adapt a multimodal stance and to analyse the different audio-visual resources and the benefits and challenges they can present when used to teach languages in the classroom. This study-unit will help students segment these resources in different modes (including picture, layout, colour and tune) and focus on the effects each mode (alone and/or with other modes) could have on language students.

Throughout the study-unit, since the very early stages students are expected to implement through practical activities the theory discussed.

Study-unit Aims:

- Help students look at the audio-visual mode(s) through which their future language school students can benefit and learn further;
- Provide students with a wide variety of practical exercises, which make them more comfortable when using audio-visual resources in their language classroom;
- Answer student questions regarding the positive and less positive effects of using audio-visual resources in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand how effective use of audio-visual resources in class can lead to more motivating, student centred language learning;
- Evaluate different ways through which audio-visuals can be used to teach a native language;
- Evaluate different ways through which audio-visual resources can be used to teach a modern foreign language;
- Examine and preempt challenges audio-visuals can offer when used by the language teacher in class.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Assess and develop their Multimodal skills;
- Produce more interesting lesson plans including exercises where audio-visuals play central role;
- Analyze different methods and develop different skills through which they can help language students autonomously learn languages through audio-visual resources they are continuously surrounded with.
