DESCRIPTION | This study-unit aims to provide students with the necessary cellular background of medical biochemistry since this biochemistry is in fact the basis of the function of the cell. Thus the cell is the translator unit between biochemical reactions and tissue and organs responses and thus medical disease and treatments. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to teach students: - The basic structure-function correlations of cell biology - how biochemistry and structure interact; and - How cells (as modulated by biochemistry) can influence disease and treatment. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Describe the basic structure of the cell; - Describe the characteristics of different important cell structures responsible for housing and guiding the basic biochemical reactions of the cell; - Distinguish between the function of different cell types according to differences in cellular components; - Explain the important cellular structures associated with different diseases; and - Describe the basic use of an inverted cell culture microscope. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Identify the different important cell structures responsible for housing and guiding the basic biochemical reactions of the cell; - Distinguish between the function of different cell types according to differences in cellular components; - Identify important cellular structures associated with different diseases; - Perform basic cell culture techniques, paying particular attention to sterility (the major problem with cell cultures); - Perform basic biochemical or biophysical viability tests on a cell line; - Identify basic features of healthy or dying cells under the microscope; and - Demonstrate the basic use of an inverted cell culture microscope.
