| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit discusses the archaeological, architectural, material and textual evidence for the central Mediterranean region during the Medieval period. Particular reference is made to the main features which characterise Malta’s Medieval record and discussion will centre on probable cross-cultural influences which filtered into Malta through neighbouring Sicily and other areas. The period under review will span from the Muslim takeover of Malta in AD 870 to 1530 but will include aspects of material cultural evidence which survived or were altered in the Early Modern period. Study-unit Aims: 1. To obtain a practical working knowledge of Maltese urban and rural Medieval Archaeology. 2. To discuss probable cross-cultural influences filtering into Malta, primarily through neighbouring Sicily and South Italy. 3. To bring to the forefront the current state of research in the central Mediterranean and the Maltese medieval fields of study, including its limitations and shortcomings. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Report on the principal medieval archaeological remains of the Maltese Archipelago. 2. Analyze and compare material, architectural and artistic cross-cultural influences filtering into Malta. 3. Describe and demonstrate the limitations of the Medieval archaeology field of study. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. Identify future research topics. 2. Develop and enhance their communication and presentation skills. 3.
