DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will focus on first-aid processes for the conservation, preservation, storage and display of artifacts/objects retrieved from an underwater context. Students will be made aware of the various techniques used to prevent the deterioration of archaeological once these have been recovered from the seabed. Students will also be exposed to practical sessions that will enable them to build a working knowledge of the basic first-aid requirements for conservation that they may implement in future fieldwork. Study-unit Aims: - To train the student how to correctively apply the appropriate conservation methods a broad variety of artefacts that occur in an underwater context; - To present the various ethical and legal issues related to the preservation and conservation of archaeological material. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - assess and evaluate the potentials problems related to the various materials that stem from an underwater excavation; - establish the appropriate conservation, transportation and long-term storage/management strategies for objects resulting from an underwater excavation; - put in place the set-up necessary for the application of 'first aid' conservation on site including essential equipment. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - to administer 'first aid' conservation to archaeological artefacts from obtained from a marine context; - to set up and run a 'first aid' conservation field station; - to work as part of a team; - to plan and strategise in the context of an archaeological project; - to work in a meticulous manner under pressure.
