TITLE The Archaeology of Standing Buildings and Structures

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Classics and Archaeology

DESCRIPTION Archaeologists often encounter historic buildings and structures as part of their investigations. Whilst some buildings are in use today as private homes others, such as chapels and agricultural buildings, are threatened areas of archaeological heritage. A better understanding of their development and form can greatly enhance the rich and varied picture portrayed by drawn and written documents and conventional archaeological sources.

Study-Unit Aims:

The archaeology of standing buildings and structures is intended to establish the character, history, dating, form and development of a specified building, or structure, or complex and its setting, on land.

Hands-on fieldwork exercises are combined with traditional classroom teaching to enable students to develop a working knowledge of buildings archaeology and its methods within the context of modern research and rescue archaeology.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Apply the principles and methods by which historic buildings and structures are dated, interpreted and recorded;
- Through practical work, acquire a range of fieldwork techniques that can be used on historic building recording projects;
- Source historical documentation that provides information about a building's age, design, function, construction, evolution, and social and economic context.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Compile a lasting record/prepare a technical assessment report on a standing building and/or structure;
