DESCRIPTION | This study-unit is a practicum designed to help Language Technology students learn through supervised project experience, consolidating their knowledge and skills by conducting a work placement. Study-Unit Aims: - familiarization of the opportunities that exist for careers within ICT, in particular in the field of language technologies; - developing and establishing contacts which might be useful for a future career in language technologies; - enhancement of employability opportunities through gaining of experience in either a research or industrial setting. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - develop a willingness to face practical solutions to work related problems; - develop a capacity to undertake duties required for employment; - identify possible future careers in ICT and HLT-related areas. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - put theoretical knowledge of Human Language Technology in the context of the requirements of a work environment; - make use of their experience of a real work environment to inform future decisions about research; - evaluate and report upon the requirements and challenges of a professional career. Main Text/s and any supplementary readings: No texts are pre-set for this course; readings will be selected on a case-by-case basis, depending on the nature of the placement. Each individual placement plan will be updated to reflect the chosen texts. |
