CODE ART1010

TITLE Introduction to Drawing Skills: Practical Sessions

UM LEVEL 01 - Year 1 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Art and Art History

DESCRIPTION In this study-unit, students explore various traditional drawing media, including pencil, pen, ink, charcoal, pastel etc, vis-a-vis the disciplined study of natural and man-made forms, working in both the studio and on-site. Sessions start from traditional observation skills and accurate recording, and move gradually towards greater experimentation and the combination of less-traditional media towards the development of ideas and the formation of a project.

The student’s practice has to be grounded in theoretical knowledge and familiarity with Modern and Contemporary artists, art practice, and artistic thought. The lectures are a mix of practice-based and theoretical sessions which lead to a better understanding of line, tone, volume, shape, form, texture, composition and perspective; and their application and interpretation.

Students are expected to follow both specific tasks and are also to work independently towards the building of a strong portfolio of works and develop a project through experimentation based on their experiences throughout the course. Additionally, students will engage with ongoing tasks, personal experiences and artists of reference in their visual journal.

Students have to get their own materials.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is for students to explore various approaches to drawing and the application of different traditional and more experimental techniques, as part of the creative process of recording and describing, interpretation and experimentation, and conceptual development.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

The study-unit is directed towards a systematic understanding of the various modes and techniques which are important for an understanding of drawing. At the end of the study-unit the student will be in a better position to understand the fundamental elements of the creative process.

2. Skills:

The sessions give the student the necessary skills to appreciate, evaluate and contextualise the practical needs which are necessary for creativity. By the end of the study-unit the student will be in a position to appreciate and to deal with the many questions appertaining to the idea of drawing and painting.
