DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will give students an overview of the major art works on the island which will be discussed within the framework of art-historical methodologies. This study-unit is a self-contained one, but will also engage with aspects of historical concern within the Diploma ‘Maltese History in Context’. The lectures will identify the protagonists and will focus on case studies in a chronological sequence. This is the proposed structure of the study-unit: • Introduction • The Late Medieval works at the Civitas • The Renaissance art works • The Early Treasures of the Knights • Caravaggio and the early seicento • The triumphant Baroque manner • The Decorative Arts of the Baroque Period • The Late Baroque and the Neo-Classical • 19th-Century Artistic currents • The Decorative Arts of the 19th century • The Architecture of the 19th century • Modern sensibilities in Art I • Modern sensibilities in Art II Study-Unit Aims: • To offer students a clear idea of how the history of Maltese Art evolved; • To make students aware of the context in which art was produced; • To help students understand and appreciate the artistic treasures of Malta. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • identify and engage with currents of artistic development; • locate the determining character of the process of change and the role of artists in this; • discuss the character of the Art in Malta and compare it to major continental productions; • illustrate patronage patterns; • understand the need to approach the written word and visual record in a critical manner. 2. Skills By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • critically assess works of art; • demonstrate the ability to contextualize artistic production; • recognize the stylistic character of the work of leading artists.
