DESCRIPTION | This study-unit prepares students to develop the necessary skills to successfully complete the taught MA programme in Mediterranean Studies and compete on the job market afterwards. Students will be trained to read and think critically, build robust and coherent arguments, write good academic essays, and deliver effective presentations. They will also be introduced to the basic principles of research ethics and integrity. The study-unit has a bipartite structure, with the first half consisting of lectures that tackle specific skills and principles, and the second half comprising a series of practical tutorials. Study-Unit Aims: 1. To introduce the concept of academic writing at postgraduate level; 2. To guide students to find appropriate sources and to engage critically with them; 3. To demonstrate how to deliver effective presentations; 4. To introduce the basic principles of research ethics and integrity. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: 1. demonstrate evidence of creative and critical thinking; 2. develop rational and coherent arguments; 3. summarize data and ideas in their own words, avoiding plagiarism; 4. compose academic essays based on an analysis and interpretation of primary and secondary sources; 5. prepare effective presentations that are clear, structured, and engaging, and which make good use of multimedia resources; 6. define, interpret, and apply the fundamental principles of research integrity as defined in the university’s guidelines on research ethics and the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity. 2. Skills Same as above. The study-unit teaches generic skills that are applicable to any field of study and many of which are highly sought in the job market.
